Kovvali and Malkapuram- Areas of Initial Action

With positive and pragmatic outlook, Tapana made its first step in the thousand mile journey to realise its vision. Registered as a Public Trust on 12 October 2007 in Hyderabad, …..the dawn of Tapana has emerged in the villages of Kovvali and Malkapuram, which are rural areas with two kilometer distance apart situated near Eluru in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. The two villages are agrarian in nature and most of the villagers are seasonably employed agricultural labourers. After substantial interaction with the local community leaders and general masses for a number of months, these two villages have been chosen on pilot basis which actually characterises contrasting demographical and developmental features.

The village of Kovvali, with population of around 14,380 is one of the major Gram Panchayats in the Denduluru Mandal. Malkapuram is a minor Gram Panchayat with 4,000 population.

Village Committee Formation- Harbinger to Community Participation

As Tapana believes in active community participation as one of the major determinants in the success of its rural development programmes, the various community representatives were encouraged to form Village Development Committees and Sub Committees for perpetual engagement in the social and economic welfare of their villages. As part of that, 8 Sub Committees were formed in Kovvali and one in Malkapuram. VDC is comprised of all the leaders of Sub Committees in a village. The individual reports were compiled by these committees comprising their requirements pertaining to infrastructure in their own community area. They are carefully scrutinised and prioritised before the launch of Tapana’s first implementation programme on 27 January 2008.
